The World Trade Organization is the only organization that deals with the rules of trade between nations to open trade. It consists of over 160 members representing 98 per cent of the world trade.
It operates a global system of trade rules and settles trade disputes between its members. By lowering trade barriers it also breaks down barriers between people and nations. It offers a forum for trade negatiations and monitores national trade policies, providing technical assistance and training for the developing countries. The goal is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and as freely as possible.
The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations that is made up of 47 United Nations Member States which are elected by the UN General Assembly.
It is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe as well as addressing situations of human rights violations and making recommendations to resolve them.
HRC has the ability to discuss all the human rights issues and situations that require its attention, providing a forum for identifying, highlighting and developing responses to today's human rights challenges. Acting as the principal point of human rights research, education, public information, and advocacy activities in the United Nations system, it helps to implement human rights standards.
UNICEF is a United Nations programme, consisting of 36-member board that establishes policies, approves programmes and oversees administrative and financial plans. It works to improve the policies and services that protect all children.
The programme serves as the primary point of distribution for such essential items as vaccines and medicines for children and mothers with HIV. It strikes to reach families in emergencies with livesaving resources and the nutritional supplements. It also implements the right to quality education for all children in the developing world or amidst conflict and crisis. The main goal is to ensure that every child, regardless of its place of birth, skin colour or religion has a right to have a healthy, peaceful chilhood.
UNSC is one of the six main organs of the United Nations. Five countries (Russia, United States of America, United Kingdom, France and China) sit as "permanent members" along with ten elected members with two-year terms. All members of the United Nations agree to accept and carry out the decisions of the Security Council. Only the SC has the power to make decisions that member states are then obligated to implement under the Charter.
It is responsible for maintaining international peace and security, by recommending to reach the agreement in peaceful ways, but can iterfere by diispatching military observers or a peacekeeping force to help reduce tensions, separate opposing forces and establish a calm. In drastic sitations it may opt for enforcement measures, including economic sanctions,financial penalties and travel bans, or even collective military action.
The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, established in June 1945. It is composed of 15 judges, who are elected for terms of office for nine years by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council. It is assisted by the Registry, its administrative organ.
The Court’s role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted by the States. The other role is giving advisory opinions on legal questions referred to that by authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies.
ECOSOC was established in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the United Nations. It is the heart of the United Nations system and its aim is to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental.
It is the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals. The other important function is promoting integrated actions on economic, social and environmental issues, within the United Nations system and beyond.
